What do “credit” and “advanced placement” mean?
Most U.S. colleges offer credit or advanced placement, or both, for qualifying AP scores.
Some students graduate from college early because of the credits they earn in high school through AP. This saves them money in tuition.
Advanced Placement
Many colleges recognize that your AP scores demonstrate that you already know the material in certain courses they offer. So they’ll let you skip those courses. These could be introductory courses required in your major, or core courses that the college requires all its students to take. Letting you skip these courses (so you can go right into advanced courses) is called granting you advanced placement.
Some students use the advanced placement earned through AP to free up space in their schedule so they can pursue a double major or take part in an internship or other special program. When students earn college credit through AP Exams, their options and opportunities expand:
• Move to upper-level college courses sooner
• Pursue a double major
• Gain time to study and travel abroad
However, some colleges use scores to help place students in higher-level classes but don't allow these credits to fulfill graduation requirements, so you can't graduate any earlier.
Even if you don't earn credit for your AP scores, AP classes can still get you ahead.
You can sign up for an AP course through your normal high school registration process. Keep in mind that some schools have prerequisite courses you have to take before you can sign up for an AP class. Track down your guidance counselor if you have any questions about this.
You'll sign up for AP tests through your school, which will have a designated AP coordinator (often a guidance counselor) to help with the process. If you're homeschooled or want to take an AP test for a class your school doesn't offer, contact your local school's AP coordinator. AP tests cost $94 each. Some schools offer subsidies, and the College Board has financial aid in the form of a $32 fee reduction.
· International test centers are international schools authorized to give AP Exams to their own students, who are generally citizens of countries other than China. Typically, these schools don’t administer exams to students who aren’t enrolled in their school. NOTE: Students at these schools who wish to take AP Exams at international test centers in China must register with their school’s AP coordinator to sit for an AP Exam.
· Local test centers serve students who are enrolled in local public or private Chinese schools authorized to offer the AP Program. They administer AP Exams to students from multiple schools. For the 2020-21 school year, College Board will partner with Prometric to manage overall exam registration and administration for local test centers. Students must register in fall 2020 for the May 2021 AP Exams. Instructions will be sent directly to the school’s AP coordinators. Students may also visit。
